What if, tomorrow, getting a medical or dental appointment became a real obstacle course?
This is the question at the heart of the Care at Risk campaign, which is calling on citizens, patients and healthcare professionals to take action. Its message is clear: access to healthcare in Belgium could change profoundly if certain developments within the healthcare system are not supported by a realistic, sustainable vision developed in consultation with professionals on the ground.
For patients, the risks are very real: longer waiting times, fewer available practitioners, care provided farther away from home, reduced freedom of choice and increasingly standardised consultations. For healthcare professionals, the pressure is growing through administrative burdens, regulatory uncertainty, budgetary constraints and the gradual loss of professional autonomy.
The dental sector is, of course, not immune to these challenges. In many regions, finding an available dentist is already becoming more difficult. Dental practices are having to deal with rising costs, more complex organisation, recruitment difficulties and ever-increasing demand for care. There is also an often underestimated reality: the quality of care depends on the time available, the ability to listen, the equipment, the team and the practitioner’s ability to work under good conditions.
The Care at Risk campaign also highlights an essential point: healthcare cannot be viewed solely as a budget item. Reducing costs is not enough if, at the same time, the number of healthcare professionals declines, waiting times increase and working conditions deteriorate. A sustainable healthcare system must invest in prevention, training, the attractiveness of healthcare professions and consultation with professionals working in the field.
Prevention is particularly important in dentistry. An ambitious oral healthcare policy can help avoid treatments that are more complex, more expensive and sometimes more invasive. Preserving access to dental care therefore also means protecting patients’ overall health from an early age.
DentalHub wishes to support and share this campaign because it goes far beyond the interests of a single profession.
